Celestial dances over the Dolomites: capturing the Northern Lights with night photography

Gianvito Coco
Experience and technique meet under the starry sky, revealing the magic of the Northern Lights without filters.

Today I am excited to share with you a truly magical moment that I was lucky enough to immortalize albeit in a very casual way as I wasn't even prepared: a Northern Lights over the majestic Dolomites. What is an Aurora Borealis?

The Northern Lights, also known as the Northern Lights, are one of the most extraordinary shows that nature offers us. These fascinating plays of light in the night sky are caused by the interaction between charged particles coming from the Sun and the Earth's magnetosphere. When these charged particles come into contact with the Earth's atmosphere, collisions occur with the atoms and molecules present in the air, thus producing a spectrum of colors ranging from green to purple, passing through pink and red. The challenge and experience:

Capturing a Northern Lights on camera is a fascinating challenge that requires not only careful planning, but also in-depth knowledge of night photography. In my recent experience, I have chosen to focus on using long exposures to capture every nuance and movement of this celestial dance.

Plan de Corones and San Vigilio di Marebbe: A Romantic Paradise! Night photography is a delicate art that requires a combination of technique and passion. Specifically, to capture the Northern Lights in all their splendor, it's essential to master long exposures. By using my camera and carefully adjusting the exposure, I was able to capture not only the beauty of the dancing lights in the sky, but also minimize the effect of light pollution, thus allowing the Northern Lights to shine with all their intensity.

What is night photography? It is important to underline that no filters or digital manipulations have been applied in these images, but is the result of a combination of experience, technique and patience. Night photography offers us the opportunity to explore and capture the beauty of the world in a different light, and I am happy to be able to share with you this shot which represents for me a moment of pure magic. Thank you for your continued support and for always being ready to explore new photographic horizons together!

Thank you for accompanying me on this small and casual photographic journey and thank you for your constant support! I can't wait to share more photography adventures with you.
